Las Vegas is an awesome explain. Season three was a cramped old-fashioned towards the middle, but certainly picks up by the kill (plus season four is grand again) . The box location is immense…and lets you procure everything you missed in 2005-2006 (plus there are a few things that had to be prick for TV) . Overall a mammoth box and well worth the brand (which is extreme to commence with) .

The second season takes place not long after the events of the first. The dolls are now trying to enjoy their happy lives but unfortunately, Shinku starts to have nightmares and it appears the remaining sisters/dolls will be coming and that can only mean the beginning of the “Alice Games”.

The Alice game is simply when the dolls must square off against each other with one left standing and will fulfill their father’s wish of the final doll becoming Alice.

Here is a spoiler-less summary of “Rozen Maiden: Träumend” :

DISC 1:

1. Rozenkristall – What are the Rozen Maid dolls up to since the events from the first season?

2. Enju – We are introduced to a new Rozen Maiden sister named Barasuishou and an evil entity named Laplace.

3. Kanarienvogel – We are introduced to another new Rozen Maidens sister named Kanaria.

4. Vereinbarung – Suiseiseki wants Jun to be her master but doesn’t know how to go about letting him know.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Rozen Maiden: Träumend – Complete Set” is an anime series that sports a lot of colors. For the most part, this is a TV animated series and of course, television series in Japan are created in a short deadline and not as much detail. But for the most part, the majority of the series takes place inside Jun’s home or total darkness, so background art is not as prominent but you do get scenes with lush, beautiful painted scenery and backgrounds. If anything, more attention was put on the characters and the dolls in battle.

It’s also important to emphasize that this is a television series and not an OAV or film. So, production quality is going to much lower. But overall, I enjoyed the character designs for the animated series and the story of “Rozen Maiden: Träumend” made things much more enjoyable for me.

As for audio, the English dub is presented in English Dolby Digital and the Japanese language in Stereo. The series is at the most part, all dialogue with some scenes sporting battles (this is more towards the later half of the series) between the Rozen Maiden dolls. I listened to both audio soundtracks and both are well-done.

JUDGMENT CALL:

The final complete set for “Rozen Maiden: Träumend” (the second season) has arrived in the US and I’m quite thrilled that FUNimation has released the series as a complete set.

After the first two volumes were released in America through Geneon in 2007, due to Geneon’s corporate situation, “Rozen Maiden: Träumend” was among many titles that were canceled.

Fortunately, in 2008, Geneon and FUNimation Entertainment announced an agreement to distribute select titles in North America and while Geneon has the license, FUNimation Entertainment will have the exclusive rights for the sales and distribution for the titles which include “Rozen Maiden: Träumend”.

The concept of living dolls may seem a bit freaky for some people but in Japan, there is a large collector-based for “Volks” dolls. As there are many guys who collect action figures and mecha machines in Japan (and also in the US), the Volks dolls are quite an accomplishment for collectors who need to build them and in the end result, these dolls are well-crafted and quite beautiful.

Of course, in America, the thought of dolls coming alive are seen in horror films (”Chucky” anyone?) and I for one, have always thought of dolls coming alive to be horrifying (yes, as a youngster, I threw out my sister’s dolls because I thought they were possessed). But overall, the concept of “Rozen Maiden” has never scared me or freaked me out and I have to admit, “Rozen Maiden: Träumend” was a much darker series than its predecessor and I have to admit that I enjoyed the overall storyline and this concept of how the dolls must fight to the death for the purpose of being “Alice”.

It’s hard to deny the cuteness of the series and their own character traits. Where this series could have been cliche and annoying, overall their own personal quirks is what makes the series so fun. I really had fun watching this series.

With “Rozen Maiden: Träumend”, you get a good balance of lighthearted humor and action. Whereas the first series focused on Jun and how the dolls have helped him overcome his “hikkimori”, this series features on character development of the dolls and how quickly they are put into a position that they don’t want to be. They just want to be happy but because their creator has put together this “Alice Game”, they can’t bow out and resist. They must fight.

In the end, I found “Rozen Maiden: Träumend” to be an enjoyable, cute and humorous anime series. The lighthearted fun carries on for a little over half of the second series but it quickly becomes serious and more intense. But for the most part, the whole series held my attention with each episode and I fount that very cool!

But now after watching this second season, I want more! One can only hope that we get the two episode OAV “Rozen Maiden: Ouvertüre” released soon in the US (this OAV supposedly gives us a look back of why Suigintou and Shinku do not get along) and hopefully we see a new series to continue the adventures of the Rozen Maiden dolls.

“Rozen Maiden: Träumend” is definitely a series worth recommending!

Rozen Maiden: Träumend is the second season of Rozen Maiden.

In a nutshell, a powerful mage named Rozen from the 18th century (revealed in the manga as Count St Germain) constructed seven dolls and imbued them with a living soul known as the Rosa Mystica. Their mission is to battle each other in what is known as the Alice Game, the winner obtaining the loser’s Rosa Mystica until the last one standing becomes Alice, a real girl of unmatched beauty and purity. To help them, it is expected they will acquire human partners they can use as a power source for the unique weapons and tactics each one possesses, but it appears this is optional as some of the dolls appear to not have human partners.

The first six of seven dolls in their order of creation are:

1. Suigintou

2. Kanaria

3. Suiseiseki

4. Souseiseki

5. Shinku

6. Hinaichigo

In Rozen Maiden: Träumend, it appears the seventh doll calls herself Barasuishou, but truth is far different than first appearance.

Rozen Maiden: Träumend is really not for the kiddies. Though it is very light and humorous, by Episode 7 the atmosphere takes a solid turn to the dark and the body count starts to rise when three of these gothic lolita dolls are driven to kill the others within the Alice game while the other three desperately try to protect themselves and each other.

One of the death scenes is so moving and so poignant, I have had male hard core anime fans confess that an anime moved them to tears.

My only complaints about Rozen Maiden: Träumend are the same I have with most anime.

1. Because the funding is iffy, the writers write their plots on the fly keeping the main points and creating many little inconsistencies in the minor details. The more minor details they mess up, the more the story loses credibility even though it may remain true to the main storyline. The more you mess up, the more retcom you have to do in future stories to correct the inconsistencies.

2. Japanese anime does not hesitate to use Christian symbols and churches as locales, but their understanding of the worldview is incredibly naive. In Rozen Maiden: Träumend, Christianity is used more as a gothic symbol of death.

3. A caricature of English romance literature is having the two people stare at each others eyes and repeat their names. That happens a lot of times in anime and a lot in Rozen Maiden: Träumend. If you cut out every scene where Jun and Shinku repeat each others names back and forth to convey emotion (despair, affection, apology, etc.), the entire anime would have been about two episodes shorter.

4. If you are going to have major characters die, their death has got to mean something and can’t be wiped away by mere platitudes that are given as shallow and unconvincing explanations. Yes, it’s anime, but if you are going to address the big topics (fate, death, responsibility, purpose), you had better come up with some substantial answers other than a shallow paradigm that’s 3,000 miles wide and only 3 inches deep.

All in all, I would still recommend Rozen Maiden: Träumend to anyone who is interested. Just be aware that though I found the anime to be outstanding, it isn’t perfect.

MOONPHASE has always had one major problem- its heroine, Hazuki, seems a bit too young to be involved in any kind of a relationship (even just a neck-biting one) with a twentyish fellow like Kouhei. This problem is compounded in this second disk by the introduction of two distant relatives who are supposedly “betrothed” to Kouhei and his cousin Seiji. OK, I might grant that Hazuki might POSSIBLY be as old as 14 (if small for that age), but Hikaru and Kaoru, who are supposed to eventually marry Seiji and Kouhei respectively, look to be no more than 12 at most. And on top of that, Seiji definitely got the better of the two; Kaoru falls down a lot, barely speaks, and seems to offer little to the series at all. Kaoru is, in fact, one of the most annoying characters in anime, and the main reason I’ve deducted one star here…. Well, and also for the slapping of Hazuki in Episode 7 (for something she was guilty of) AND in Episode 10 (for something she wasn’t.) Even granted that she was doing something pretty bad in Ep. 7, slapping a woman doesn’t cut it in the U.S., though this is a rather common scene in anime.

The good news is, except for these lapses, these 5 episodes would rate 5 stars. We get a good deal more information about Elfreide (one of the most intriguing characters in anime, effectively combining sexy and mysterious), and the introduction of the best villain in the series: Count Kinkel, a vampire who can play tricks with your eyes. Episodes 8-10 detail the the Mido’s first encounter with Kinkel, who has lured Hazuki into his lair with an illusion of her mother. Episode 9 has a rather gruesome thing happen to one of our heroes, though it isn’t shown explicitly, and it leads to a crisis over the acceptance of Hazuki by the Midos.

The series continues its notable “arty” look and sound (including its wonderfully bizarre opening “song”), and does a great job of being both Gothic and comical, though Gothic is in the ascendant in this chapter.

Kouhei, Hazuki, Seiji, and Gramps have gone to Kyoto to consult with the Mido clan about the dangerous weakening of Haiji, the cat familiar sent by Hazuki’s mother. While there we are introduced to Hikaru and Kaori, two little shrine priestess girls who are supposedly the arranged brides of Kouhei and Seiji. Of course, they have an automatic dislike for Hazuki, who they regard as a demon and a threat to their love matches. Hazuki still has a long way to go in terms of social interaction because she’s still using her hypnotic abilities to get her way. She might have gone too far though when she uses her mind control on Kouhei’s best friend and editor Hiromi. Behind the scenes, Count Kinkel has arrived in town after Elfriede’s failure to persuade Hazuki to return to her imprisonment. He will use an illusion in the form of Hazuki’s mother to lead her away from her friends and into danger.

The first thing that stands out about this show is its beautiful colors, which are bright but always have the feel of being filtered through a twilight curtain, giving a somehow earthy and organic feel. Moon Phase is also extremely well animated. It also does a good job of mixing drama, comedy, action, and horror, along with a bid dose of cuteness in all the female designs. What gives this anime a poignant twist is that Hazuki is just looking for a place to belong, and she sees that place as near her mother, who she is desperately looking for. Kouhei too, is missing his mother, and we learn in this volume that Haiji actually belonged to Kouhei’s mom originally, so perhaps they can both get some closure later in the series. Count Kinkel makes a great villain as he delights in causing people suffering. The only annoying thing is when Haiji changes from cat form to a little doll sized talking cat girl which bordered on overkill in the cuteness department. This is a great looking show which is also well written

In terms of the basic plot “Uptown Girls” is totally predictable. Molly Gunn (Brittany Murphy) is a spoiled little rich girl who needs to grow up when she is forced to go out and get a job for the first time in her life. Ray Schleine (Dakota Fanning) is an 8-year-old even littler little rich girl who is not only a hypochondriac and wise beyond her years but who needs to learn how to be a kid. Of course circumstances throw them together when Molly becomes Ray’s nanny. There is the comic period of butting heads, the tentative beginnings of friendship, the point at which things blow up big time, and the heartfelt reconciliation. But one of the reasons that formula films like this continue to be made is because more often than not they work. The result is not a great film, but an enjoyable one where the best part of the film is the finale, where between them writers Julia Dahl, Mo Ogrodnik, Lisa Davidowitz and Allison Jacobs come up with a creative way of bringing together major plot elements.

The twist with Molly Gunn is that she is the daughter of a rock ‘n’ roll legend, guitarist Tommy Gunn. Her parents were killed in a plane crash when she was about Ray’s age and she has been living off the residuals. In her apartment there is a shrine in which all of her father’s guitars are displayed, including the one on which he wrote his biggest hit, “Molly Smiles,” the song that Molly can no longer bear to here. Molly might be spoiled, but she has a kind heart and not a mean bone in her body. When her accountant steals all of her money and disappears she has her friends, Ingrid (Marley Shelton) and Huey (Donald Faison), who stay true and try to help her survive in the real world (I liked not having to do deal with her friends forgetting her now that she is broke). She also likes Neal Fox (Jesse Spencer), the young musician who plays at her birthday party. The only problem is that he is 274 days in his sobriety and wants to be celibate the first year. But he too is inspired by Molly to write a song that becomes a hit.

Ray’s mother, Roma Schleine (Heather Locklear) runs a record label, which, of course, signs Neal. This also explains why Ray needs a Nanny and we already know why the kid’s attitude has a long procession of nanny’s coming and going. But beyond her immaculate room and her preoccupation with germs and disease, Ray has her own father issue: he suffered a stroke and is now a vegetable set up in the library of the apartment. She seldom talks about her dad and she never visits him. To Molly, this is just wrong, but she does not give the obvious speech. Ray is smart enough to know what she would say and Molly bides her time until the time comes to say the right thing. In the counter-part to that scene that comes shortly afterwards, Molly and Ray communicate a whole range of emotions without either one of them even saying a word. Films like this rarely let silence speak so well on the behalf of the characters.

Dakota Fanning was the best thing in “Taken,” and after her solid performance in “I Am Sam” it is nice to see her do a more comedic role in this film. Count me in the growing list of those who think she could well be the Jodi Foster of her generation (to wit, she is better than Jodi Foster was at this age and you have the sense that she can make the transition from child star to adult star). Brittany Murphy, who was wasted in “Just Married” and was asked to do something decidedly different in “8 Mile,” sinks her teeth into this role. She has the ditzy parts down pat, but it is the honest moments that she shares with both Ray and Roma that she achieves her best grace notes in the film. She should get a lot of opportunities to do more romantic comedies and as long as they have some basis in the real world and do not require her character to go over the top, she should thrive in such roles.

Again, I want to applaud the creativity shown at the end of the film. Coming up with a payoff at the end of a film like this is difficult, because you need something that brings the characters together in a happy ending. What I like about this ending is that it achieves this without the characters involved ever making physical contact, by involving at least a half-dozen key plot elements, and, most importantly, by having the song we have been waiting almost the entire movie to hear be as good as it was supposed to be. When you watch the film a second time pay attention to how the music is set up during the auction scene. There might not be enough new here to make this a great film, but director Boaz Yakin has made “Uptown Girls” a nicely crafted formula film that more than meets our expectations.

Brittany Murphy, Dakota Fanning and a pig called Mu star in the curious comedy “Uptown Girls”, directed by Boaz Yakin. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, I thought. There were parts I liked, parts I hated, parts I was intrigued by, and parts that just left me baffled. Overall, I liked it though.

Molly (Brittany Murphy), is the daughter of a late rock star, and lives off his wealth, in decadence, within a large apartment, along with her pet pig Mu. She is fairly superficial, as are her friends, and Molly’s rather childish too. Sometime after her 22nd birthday, her late father’s manager runs off with all the money she’d been living from, leaving her with nothing. She is kicked out of her apartment and has to find a job. She ends up becoming a nanny to “Ray” (Dakota Fanning), an uptight, smart alecy, germophobe of a little girl, the daughter of a wealthy record executive. They are certainly an odd couple, and some comic scenes follow, but its not all laughs. As the two girls spend time together, there are many a touching and dramatic moment as they realise they have a lot in common, both being a little eccentric, both being the daughters of wealthy families, and both having certain tragedies in their lives they’re yet to cope with.

I wouldn’t exactly call this a straight ahead comedy. Though there is a love interest for Molly as well, a Morrissey-esque rock singer (Jesse Spencer) she meets at her birthday party, I wouldn’t call this a romantic comedy either, as this fellow isn’t the main focus of the film, and their relationship isn’t exactly conventional. Neither of them really seem interested in each other, yet they come together, on again off again. The whole film was just this kaleidescope of elements, tumbling around within the plot.

Though I was a little put off at first, I found this film fascinating. It was interesting to see characters first potrayed as parodies show a depth later on, while characters who seemed more three dimensional later showed a shallower side. No one here was exactly a carciature, but no one again was exactly completely real. It was a refreshing mix of the two, and I think they all pulled it off fairly well.

Special features include a quite large selection of deleted and alternate scenes, including a sex scene or two for some reason, as well as a behind the scenes featurette with interviews with the actors and director Boaz Yakin, a featurette about the fashion of the film, a montage of stills, the original movie trailer and a music video for “Time” by Chantal Kreviazuk, which looks pretty standard for a movie soundtrack music video (shots of singer singing interdispersed with footage from the film, etc). I would have preferred to see a music video for the songs Jesse Spencer’s rock singer character sings, I quite liked those, they were funny and catchy, one of my favorite parts of the film.

An intriguing comedy, got me thinking by the end of it. Worth a look.

Role Models is not a particularly deep or innovative comedy, in fact it’s plotline will be familiar to anyone who has ever watched a movie, period. But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t provide lots of laughs and worthy needed escapism for it’s 90 plus minutes.

Paul Rudd And Sean William Scott star as two slackers who acquire themselves sentenced to 30 days of community service following a work related blow up by Rudd’s characther that comes on the heels of being dumped by his longtime girlfriend (Elizabeth Banks) . The two are ordered to do their hours of community service at a Huge Brothers and Sisters type of organization where each of them are paired up with a “haunted” kid.

Can you guess where this is going? The two men will learn to view past their absorb self indulgence and care for the kids. A indispensable lesson is learned by all. This station really doesn’t matter. What does matter are the performances. Rudd and Scott are hilarious as the overgrown man-children and they section an effortless chemistry. Rudd especially is in top gain, spewing sarcasm and self loathing with every line and garnering laughs from his facial expressions alone. Rudd is clearly in his element here.

When Rudd turns into an unselfish nice guy at the demolish, it’s a bit of a stretch for the audience to win that he made such a fleet transition. Rudd’s performance may be hilarious, but his character is not that well developed for his transformation to be believable. But hey, this ain’t art. It’s a largely bright buddy comedy with lots of sparkling and raunchy humor that should be viewed as exactly that.

Pretty grand everyone, even Kevin Smith, is trying to cash in on the success of Judd Apatow and friends. Never before have such a talented, intellectual group of comedians reach together to build such a collection of hilarious and heartfelt films. From Rogen to Rudd, from Hill to Segel, from Carell to Cera, Judd Apatow knows how to cast some droll and creative dudes, so naturally Hollywood would try to bid his success and grab these dudes up. The team slack ROLE MODELS scored huge, recruiting Apatow alums Paul Rudd (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad), along with a fine amusing guy who hasn’t gotten a lot of admire in the film industry recently, Seann William Scott (Stiffler from American Pie) . Despite the strong cast, the trailer mild some blooming terrible jokes and stiff moments, so I belief this Apatow-copy would surely be a stinker… but surprisingly, it was really, really generous. Chock rotund of both laughs and heart, this is definitely worth watching.

The premise is simple. Two men who use their lives going school-to-school selling energy drinks to students wind up in court after the more-uptight dude snaps after a particularly corrupt day. Instead of going to jail, the two opt to be mentors (”Bigs”) to some kids (”Littles”) who have been unsuccessful in keeping a mentor around thus far. The kids are hilarious and really impressed me. One of them is played by Bobb’e Jacques Thompson, a mini-twelve year archaic and self-described “Booby Watcher.” Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays Augie Farks, a role-playing nerd who is neglected by his family. The location, on the surface, is a straight forward dramedy in which the mentor program teaches both the mentor and the kid something famous, but the ways it’s done is so fantastically creative and tongue-in-cheek that you forget how obsolete the arc of the epic really is. Plus, Paul Rudd is basically a record, so watching him crack jokes, glean attached to Augie, and order freestyle songs to his girlfriend on a faux-Medieval battlefield is an experience everybody deserves to have.

ROLE MODELS blew my expectations away. Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott had delicate righteous chemistry, but what really made this film was their relationships with the two kids. It was touching, hilarious, and really creatively done.

The movie stars Adam Sandler (Bulletproof, The Wedding Singer, Billy Madison) as Jubilant Gilmore, a short-fused hockey player who unprejudiced realized he AGAIN didn’t earn the slice for his hockey team for the 10th time in a row. After taking out his raging arouse on the coach, he life begins to spiral downwards when his girlfriend leaves him, and he realizes his grandmother’s prized house built by his grandfather’s bare hands if about to be seized by the IRS in 90 days due to her failure to pay taxes in over a decade. But when he discovers his monster hockey slapshot equals one hell of a talent in golf, he is talked into playing golf by a local retired golfer, Chubbs Peterson, for the money to reclaim his grandma’s house. But not only is Overjoyed not ready for golf, but the president of the Pro Tour, Doug Thompson, doesn’t mediate golf is ready for Gay! Even his future golf enemy, Shooter McGavin, thinks he’s making a mockery of golf with his very terrible temper and his rambunctious behavior. But Glad is a hit with fans, so he’s weaved himself through the loophole…for now. For a radiant moment he’s riding on Cloud 9-iron, but Shooter McGavin, and the accidental death of his beloved mentor Chubbs, are threatening to acquire away not only his grandmother’s house, but his dream as well, and it’s not unbiased about his grandma’s house anymore…it’s about triumph.

So, if you appreciate simple comedy, accept Blissful Gilmore on DVD. You’ll drop down laughing….guaranteed!

Adam Sandler does it again with “Gay Gimore.” By far his best movie, Adam plays a wanna be hockey player with a short-fuse. He gets in many fights in this movie, one with Bob Barker I might add.

The anecdote starts out with the audience finding out that he has tried out for this Minnesota hockey team too many times and has never been well-liked. He has had enough of this happening to him so he tries to stab someone with his skate.

He leaves the ice and later on a veteran to be golfer with a wooden hand noticed his ability and soon enough he is on the PGA tour. The only secure is, he doesn’t want to be someone that wears tight clothing and volleyball hats while playing golf….he wants fans cheering, beach-balls being hit, and fans calling his name.

A rival golfer hates this and tries to fetch rid of him and that is where the memoir takes off. Sandler plays a stout role and is very droll of course. Now, I don’t know about you, but if you say you like comedy but haven’t seen this one yet, you are definitely not a comedy fan.

Happy Gilmore has no faults and is laughter the whole draw through. So if you feel like watching a movie with your buddies that you know you are gonna die laughing at, I would suggest buying this movie because you WILL look it again and again.

It’s hard not to feel like one has entered a certain dimension of video-game logic while watching Hitman, a lightly enjoyable action-suspense movie indeed based on a popular and bloody game about a mysterious hired gun with a bar-code tattoo on his bald head and a number (47) in lieu of a name. Living like a chaste monk while slipping past borders to kill his targets, 47 (Timothy Olyphant of Deadwood) moves like a determined shark and speaks softly to his contact at the enigmatic “the Organization,” which raises cast-off children to become well-paid assassins. Fruitlessly pursud by an Interpol cop (Dougray Scott) who can never get sovereign governments to cooperate, 47 has no trouble slipping in and out of countries to ply his trade. Until, that is, he’s set up to take a fall in Russia by shooting a national leader who is promptly replaced by a lookalike double. Suddenly on the run, 47 has to retrace his steps and formulate a lethal plan for extricating himself from a trap. Caught in the chaos is the lovely Nika (Olga Kurylenko), forced into sex slavery by 47’s new enemies and the one person who seems uniquly qualified to break through 47’s many personal barriers. Directed by France’s Xavier Gens, Hitman features loads of bloody mayhem and unabashed moments of pulp absurdity, such as a scene in which 47 and three other Organization killers agree to fight one another respectfully, then proceed to pulverize each other with swords and fists. As fodder for gamers, however, Hitman is packed with visuals and dramatic moments that seem so odd on the big screen until one realizes they are basically placemarkers for the video-game edition. –Tom Keogh
